Confusion arose after Afridi's representative, Umran Khan, claimed on Tuesday that he would join the county next week after settling his dispute with the Pakistan Cricket Board.
But a Hampshire spokesman said: "We haven't received any notificiation yet.
"We are aware as a club that there have been discussions between Afridi and the PCB but we were not privy to those."
Afridi, 31, was scheduled to join Hampshire in time to make his debut in their FL t20 opener against Somerset earlier this month.
But the PCB withdrew his No Objection Certificate (NOC) after suspending his central contract for disparaging remarks he made about the board.
The England and Wales Cricket Board consequently removed Afridi's registration because of the row.
Afridi held a meeting with the PCB on Tuesday and then withdrew a petition he filed against the board in the Sindh High Court on Wednesday, opening the way for his NOC to be re-instated.
Khan had said he was confident that Afridi, who was also poised to play Twenty20 cricket for Hampshire last summer but opted to lead Pakistan in the Test series against Australia instead, would soon be turning out in the county's colours.
"Shahid will be able to play for Hampshire next week," he told BBC Radio Solent. "The meeting between Shahid and Ijaz Butt [PCB chairman] went very well and both parties have come to an amicable agreement.
"I spoke to Giles White [Hampshire manager] and they're very pleased that it's all sorted.
"Shahid is very excited to finally be linking up with Hampshire and get back to doing what he loves, which is playing cricket."
Reigning Twenty20 champions Hampshire, who are top of the South Group after winning five of their opening six matches, are equally hopeful of finally getting Afridi on board.
"I understand there is a tribunal hearing tomorrow and we will eagerly await the outcome of that," the county's spokesman added.
"If we get confirmation that the NOC has come through then we will get Shahid on a plane immediately.
"Having spoken to Shahid last time he was here I'm under no illusions that he is raring to get back to Hampshire to play."
